How to get the Red to come out?

Primulina 'Loki' grown by Paul Susi with Red showing.
Story # 148,

Primulina ‘Loki’ is a plant collector’s delight and many growers are watching it.

This reddish/purple coloration is showing up as a mystery.  Where is it coming from and what causes it?   --- Light, fertilizer, age, temperature?

            Nobody knows.

If it can be consistently duplicated, we can make 'Loki', the best compact Primulina, even more interesting.

  1. Wish I knew! The plant is about 1 year old and gets very little fertilizer.

  2. I would guess either light or temperature.

  3. John, 2-T8s, lower shelf. Unheated basement - summer as warm as 80. Other interesting thing that I noticed - some other Lokis do not have the rounded leaves that mine does.

  5. Paul, John and Ruth,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. The mystery of this red being unmasked from the green is worth solving. If we can manipulate the environment to bring the red out, we have a new Christmas plant.
