Streptocarpus 'Jealous Heart' - 2013 |
I’m searching for the most heat tolerant Streptocarpus, which,
in my judgement, is ‘Jealous Heart’.
I’ve found a reference to this plant in Gesneriads, vol 63,
number 3, Third Quarter 2013. Mary Schaeffer
reported that ‘Jealous Heart’ was picked for the Challenge Class at the
Philadelphia Flower Show – 2013.
I had forgotten that I was involved with that pick and grew
the starter plants that were distributed to the growers who entered to show
that they were the best home growers.
The significance of this history is that we know that the
pool of people who know this variety is bigger than expected.
Does anyone still have it?
Perhaps this grower? https://www.etsy.com/shop/BrandywineBotanica
ReplyDeleteThank you for this lead. Nanette has a large collection of Streptocarpus but does not have 'Jealous Heart' at this time.
DeleteI will keep looking, but it may be lost.
I live in NM where it is dry and hot. Streps are my second favorite Gesneriad after Mini Sinningia. Because of your mention that it is heat tolerant. I thought it would be fun to grow or use in my own hybridizing. So a few weeks ago I asked on various plant groups on Facebook and Reddit. But so far I have had no response. Nobody seems to of ever seen one. The only strep I have found that is heat tolerant is Dale Martens Gator's Tail' with a narrow, but thick leaf because its father was the heat tolerant Strep kentaniensis. So I am going to try finding it to grow.
ReplyDeleteHeat tolerance will be a very important characteristic going forward.
ReplyDeleteCommercial growers avoid Streptocarpus in the summer because they wilt at 85 degrees.
'Jealous Heart' may be lost -- my fault.
